What is Emotional Intelligence?
Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is a set of emotional and social skills that influence the way we:
- Perceive and express ourselves.
- Develop and maintain social relationships.
- Cope with challenges and use emotional information in an effective and meaningful way.
It’s the ability to understand your own emotions and the emotions of others, and to use this awareness to manage your behavior and relationships. High EQ is strongly linked to personal well-being and professional success.

Background
The Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQ-i) is the original, scientifically validated measure of emotional and social intelligence, developed by Dr. Reuven Bar-On in 1997. It was one of the first scientifically-developed and validated measures of emotional intelligence, and it paved the way for the instruments you are licensed to use. The EQ-i is based on a five-composite, 15-subscale model of emotional and social functioning.
The EQ-i 2.0 is the updated and enhanced version of the original EQ-i. It is a leading psychometric assessment that measures an individual’s emotional and social intelligence across five distinct Composite Scales and 15 Subscales:
- Self-Perception: Understanding and expressing one’s emotions.
- Self-Expression: Managing and controlling one’s emotions.
- Interpersonal: Developing and maintaining relationships.
- Decision Making: Using emotional information in problem-solving.
- Stress Management: Coping with challenges and change.

The EQ-i 2.0 provides a deep understanding of a client’s current emotional-social functioning and highlights areas for development and coaching, providing an excellent foundation for any personalized growth plan.
